Embracing Change: No Medals for Most Injured Handler

Our dogs are our world, but sometimes life throws curveballs. A recent scary diagnosis has me facing surgery, and with more physical limitations looming, I’ve made the tough decision to introduce a head halter (it’s this one, we love it!) for Pandora.

I know, I know. It might seem odd at this point in her training, when her manners are beautiful. It may even seem like a step backwards. But as my abilities change, so must our tools. It’s not about “bad” training, it’s about adapting to ensure both of us stay safe and happy.

A head halter offers that extra control with minimal effort on my part, crucial as I recover from surgeries. It’s an accommodation, not a failure. We all have different needs, and there’s no shame in using tools that make life easier. If Pandora sees a threat now, it’s no big deal. A little bit of fuss at most and then we move on. If she spots one after surgery, she could seriously injure me with even a little bit of a tug on the lead.

If you’re struggling with similar challenges and feel like you’re failing, please remember: there’s no medal for being the most injured handler. Prioritize your well being, and don’t hesitate to utilize the resources available. Our dogs love us unconditionally; they just want us to be safe and healthy.

So, here’s to new beginnings, adapting with grace, and embracing the tools that allow us to enjoy our pups to the fullest. Remember, it’s okay to ask for help, and it’s okay to use what you need. Safety comes first.
