I describe myself and my training methods as “LIMA-leaning Balanced”. Mine is a dog training philosophy that prioritizes using the least intrusive and minimally aversive methods to achieve training goals while acknowledging the potential value of all training tools and techniques. Heres why I take this approach.
Emphasis on positive reinforcement: LIMA-leaning balanced training heavily emphasizes positive reinforcement methods like rewards, praise, and play to motivate and shape desired behaviors. This builds a strong and positive bond between the dog and the trainer. My training philosophy is heavily bond based.
Tailored approach: It recognizes that no single training method works for every dog. By considering the individual dog’s learning style, temperament, and motivations, I can choose the most effective and humane techniques for that specific dog.
Openness to various tools: While prioritizing positive methods, LIMA-leaning balanced training doesn’t completely rule out tools like prong collars or e-collars. However, their use is carefully considered, used ethically, and always preceded by exploring positive reinforcement options first. Remember that corrections and punishments are not the same thing.
Focus on clear communication: This approach emphasizes clear and consistent communication between the dog and the trainer. This helps the dog understand expectations and builds trust in the training process.
Balanced perspective: LIMA-leaning balanced training acknowledges that sometimes, addressing certain behavioral issues might require more structured or intensive methods beyond just positive reinforcement (think very high drive, aggressive, primitive working breeds, etc). However, it emphasizes using these methods only as a last resort and with careful consideration of animal welfare.
Overall, LIMA-leaning balanced training offers a flexible and adaptable framework for dog training that prioritizes positive methods while acknowledging the potential value of other tools and techniques when used ethically and responsibly.
