It’s Time; Now What?

It’s hard enough having to euthanize a pet. What makes it harder is all the decisions that come with it, like whether to euthanize in office or hire an at home euthanasia service. Here are some pros and cons to consider.

In Office Euthanasia
Pros:
  *Typically more affordable
*Veterinary staff are equipped to handle any unexpected complications.
*May be preferable if your pet was already terminal, your vet is more aware of their needs.

Cons:
*The vet may be stressful for your pet.
*The car ride to the clinic may be stressful for your dog.
*You have less control over the environment and pace of the procedure.

At Home Euthanasia
Pros:
*Allows your dog to spend their final moments in a place they know and are comfortable.
*Provides a more private, intimate setting for your pet to pass, where everyone can be present
*You have more control over the pace of the procedure.

Cons:
  *Typically more expensive
*There is a small chance that complications could happen that an at home euth vet just is not equipped for. Know where your local emergency vet is just in case.
*You will likely be working with a stranger

Ultimately, it’s a deeply personal decision figuring out how to best say goodbye. Your pets comfort should be a top priority, with yours being a close second. Discuss your pets quality of life and individual needs with your vet for help deciding.

It’s important to remember that euthanasia is an act of kindness. You are putting your pets comfort above your own and ending their suffering. Saying goodbye is so incredibly difficult, know that you’re doing the right thing. It’s okay to let go.
