Is it Time? Help deciding

Saying goodbye to a beloved canine companion is one of the toughest decisions a dog owner faces.  There isn’t a single, right answer to knowing when it’s time, and the choice is ultimately a deeply personal one.

Here are some general thoughts that may help you navigate this difficult time:

💜Quality of life over quantity:  Focus on how your dog is feeling rather than just clinging on to more days.  If your dog is having more bad days than good, struggling to do the things they love, or experiencing chronic pain that isn’t well controlled by medication, then euthanasia may be the kindest option.

💜Favorite activities: Pay attention to whether your dog is still able to enjoy their favorite activities, like going for walks, playing fetch, or cuddling on the couch. If these activities become a struggle or bring them no joy, it may be a sign that their quality of life is declining.

💜Better a month too soon than a minute too late:  Err on the side of compassion. It’s always better to say goodbye a little earlier than to wait too long. Assess if your dog is in pain or distress regularly.

Remember, your veterinarian is a valuable resource throughout this process. They can provide guidance, answer your questions, and help you determine the best course of action for your pup.

There are also quality of life assessment tools available online that can be a helpful starting point for discussions with your veterinarian.

Remember that this is a choice you, your family, and your vet need to make. Others will have opinions that do not matter. Unless they’re living with your dog, paying the dogs bills, and have partial ownership over the dog, they have no right to be involved in the end of life decision. This is deeply personal and for you and the family to decide.
