Finding the Right Puppy

It’s a big decision choosing the right puppy! It’s important to consider your needs, lifestyle, and preferences to find a puppy who will be a great fit for you. Here’s a few tips to help you navigate this stage of obtaining a new best friend.

It’s time for some self reflection!

Lifestyle: Consider your living situation, activity level, and daily routine. Do you have a backyard or safe space to let them run? How much time can you dedicate to walks and playtime?

Your needs: Are you looking for a cuddle buddy, a sports dog, an exercise partner, or a potential service dog?

Preferences: Do you have a size preference? Do you hate the sound of barking? Are you open to grooming needs? How much time do you want to spend exercising the dog?

It’s time for some research!

Research different breeds: Once you have a good understanding of your needs, research breeds that match your criteria. Consider factors like temperament, drive, energy level, trainability, and grooming requirements.

Breed associations: Visit breed club websites for in-depth information and breeder listings.

Talk to breeders: Contact ethical breeders and ask questions about their breeding practices, health testing, and puppies’ temperaments.

It’s time for some breeders!

Ethical breeders: Look for breeders who prioritize the health and well-being of their dogs. They should conduct breed required health testing (check with breed club or OFA to find out what tests should be done), socialize puppies, do things to prove their dogs, and provide proper care.

Red flags: Avoid breeders who prioritize profit over dog welfare. Popular does not mean ethical. Be wary of breeders who have multiple litters simultaneously on a regular basis.

Double check: check a Facebook group called Uncensored Opinions of Breeders (For Real), they always find the good and the bad on any breeder. (I have no affiliation)

It’s time for some rescues and private rehomes!

Where to look: breed specific rescues exist, and general rescues and shelters may have purebreds or nice crosses as well. Petfinder is great for this.

Remember: shop OR adopt responsibly!

It’s time to choose your puppy!

Okay, I lied: This is a trick section. Most often, an ethical breeder should be picking your puppy for you, pairing you with the best personality for your needs. They know these dogs inside and out, and the one you find cutest may be a bad fit for you.

If you need a dog for a job or the breeder doesn’t pick them, see about third party temperament testing.

Remember not to take this lightly. This may be your companion for the next 15 years, do the things you can now to set everyone up for success.
